Beginner's Knitting with Mary Kaiser
We have a spectacular knitting class for those who have no experience with knitting or have tried and failed. This class is for students age 16 and up. Taught by the skilled and knowledgeable Mary Kaiser and broken down into two classes so you won't walk away after one class feeling lost.
In the first session of Beginning Knitting, students will start with a brief introduction to the craft of knitting, focusing on how it is different from crochet and on some of the many styles of the craft throughout the world. Then students get started right away with casting on, getting the first row of stitches on the needles, and then you practice the knit stitch, creating a garter stitch scarf by knitting every row. We will spend some time practicing the movements to develop muscle memory. As we conclude the first session, we will talk about how to read your knitting after you put it down so that you can pick up and continue knitting at home.
The second, follow-up session will begin with answering questions, trouble-shooting, and going over any information that was missed the first time. We’ll get back on track with more practice, and we’ll talk about additional resources you can use to explore the craft of knitting further. We’ll talk about types of yarn, tools that you really need (and those you don’t need to bother with), and the most helpful knitting books and online guides.
Mary Kaiser discovered knitting when she was nine years old and her great-aunts bequeathed to her their collection of knitting needles. With a ball of yarn and a knitting book from the library, she began to explore this simple and rewarding craft, moving from a simple scarf to lace, socks, fair isle and Scandinavian color patterns, and finally to designing her own patterns. More than fifty years later, sharing knitting with others is a joyful result of years of practice, so Mary has taught beginning and advanced knitting at UAB’s ArtPlay, and she wrote a column about knitting for Interweave Knits. She has three free patterns available for download on the Ravelry website. Her Ravelry name is MrsRamseyKnits.
