Begining Quilting

We are offering a Beginners Quilting class to help you gain confidence and build skills. Join Bib & Tucker Sew-Op's Shirley Hamilton, as she teaches you the basics of quilting based on the simple Irish Chain quilt, constructed using Nine-Patch blocks. Come prepared to have fun and learn. Open to ages 8 and up, under 12 must be accompanied by an adult for the full duration of the class. 

Between now and the class, we suggest you set up your machine, give it a good cleaning, wind a bobbin, thread your machine, put in a new needle, and practice stitching, to make sure you are comfortable with your machine and ready to get sewing during the class. (This is not a class on how to use your machine).

Time: 10AM - 4PM

Location: Bib & Tucker Sew-Op Shop, 7001 Crestwood Blvd. Suite #1202, Birmingham, AL 35210

During this class you will learn:

Fabric selection: fabric content cotton, poly, linen, or blends? Color and contrast. Matchy, scrappy, or controlled scrappy?

Fabric preparation: Prewash or not? Ironing vs. pressing. To starch or not to starch?

Cutting and assembly: Accurate cutting techniques, sewing a perfect 1/4" seam, matching seams, trimming and squaring blocks

Glossary of quilting terms: Bias and why it matters; HST, QST, HRT and other shapes; What's in a (precut) name?

And much more!

Supplies Needed:

-Sack lunch and drink

-Sewing Machine (If you do not have a machine you can rent one from Bib & Tucker for $15.00)

-Extra Sewing Machine Needle (Universal needle is preferred)-Extra Bobbins for your Machine

-Neutral thread (a good choice is Coats and Clark all-purpose thread)

-Scissors

-Seam ripper

-Ruler made for quilting (6x12 is a good size, but anything at least 6.5" long will work)

BRING THESE SUPPLIES IF YOU HAVE THEM

-Rotary cutter

-Starch

WE WILL SUPPLY

-Fabric to make a pillow (our choice of fabric)

-Bib & Tucker is a 501c3 non-profit organization and the funds generated from this class help to compensate our instructors and fund our overall programs. For this reason we are only able to issue refunds or class credits, if WE, Bib & Tucker Sew-Op happen to cancel or reschedule this class. If YOU register for this class and are unable to attend for any reason, we offer a 50% refund for cancellations 30 or more days prior to the class, we offer no refund for cancellations less than 30 days before the class.
