Beyond the Straight Stitch: Decorative Crazy Quilt Pillow

Join Sew-Op member Shirley Hamilton as she guides you in an exploration of fancy built-in stitches on a sewing machine to make a pillowcase. Vintage crazy quilts have a long history as Victorian-inspired art statements, typically incorporating asymmetrical pieces of silks, velvets, woolens, and cottons of various textures and patterns. The pieced item was embellished by hand with fancy stitches, colorful thread, beads, lace and trims to show off the maker's needlework skills. Crazy quilts could represent wealth with fine, imported silks or poverty with scraps from worn-out clothing. Join us to blend vintage and modern as you create your own crazy quilt with upcycled fabric from Bib & Tucker's stash and the built-in library of fancy stitches on our sleek, modern sewing machines. We will also have some vintage crazy quilts on display for inspiration. (Open to adults.) 
Dates: Saturday, July 25th 2026

Time: 10am- 3pm

Location: Bib & Tucker Sew-Op Shop, 7001 Crestwood Blvd. Suite #806, Birmingham, AL 35210

Skills Needed:

-confident use of sewing machine including threading, winding bobbin, and sewing straight seams

Supplies Needed:

- Sack lunch and drink if desired

Supplies Included:
-Fabrics, thread, needles, batting.
-Use of sewing Bib & Tucker Sew-Op sewing machines.

Skills you will Learn:
- Experiment with different threads, tensions, stitch lengths and widths to understand those fancy built-in stitches on a sewing machine.
-Stitch fabric pieces together to form Crazy Quilt “top;” sandwich and baste the backing, batting and top; then quilt along seam lines with colorful decorative stitches on our new sewing machines.
-Learn to finish a pillow with a zipper closure and edging. Students will leave with a completed pillow.

-Bib & Tucker is a 501c3 non-profit organization and the funds generated from this class help to compensate our instructors and fund our overall programs. For this reason we are only able to issue refunds or class credits, if WE, Bib & Tucker Sew-Op happen to cancel or reschedule this class. If YOU register for this class and are unable to attend for any reason, we offer a 50% refund for cancellations 30 or more days prior to the class, we offer no refund for cancellations less than 30 days before the class.
